STAYCATIONS are expected to boom in popularity after a bumper 2020 season.

Last year, the ever-changing travel restrictions abroad meant many holiday parks and caravan sites sold out due to the high demand by Brits wanting a UK trip.

A study by Wyndham Hotels & Resorts revealed that 44 per cent of people are intending to revisit a UK destination, while 39 per cent are going to explore a new location across the country this year.

While many families are no doubt eager to book a holiday a bit further away and a bit warmer, travel restrictions which mean extra costs are likely to put Brits off from booking.

Last year, campsites not only reported they sold out during the summer months, but that they were also facing a shortage for summer 2021 as families moved their annual trip to this year.

In September, camping website Pitchup.com had 1,400 bookings for this summer – an increase of 500 per cent – while Canopy and Stars, who offer glamping holidays, had more bookings for August 2021 than last August.

Haven's Chief Marketing Officer, Gerard Tempest recently told Sun Online Travel that popular areas such as Devon and Cornwall are expected to sell out for holidays "a lot earlier than they normally would".

He added: "We're seeing strong booking for May half-term, July, August and even October half-term next year."

"There were a lot of people who couldn't go abroad last year who switched to staycations and I think that trend will remain as there will still be nervousness and restrictions around international travel. A lot of people are choosing to holiday domestically this year, particularly at holiday parks."

"Those who haven't booked a staycation yet but want to should look outside of school holidays. It's how you've got the best chance of securing availability right now."

One expert has said that staycations are likely to return by March, while short-haul travel may not be on the cards until summer.
