He said while the measures are “difficult for everyone”, he urged shoppers to be “kind patient and respectful” to staff in Tesco stores.

It comes as many supermarkets are tightening up shopping rules in store.

Stores including Aldi, Morrisons and Sainsbury's are banning people from entering shops if they are not wearing a face mask.

Restrictions have been ramped up over fears supermarkets are hotbeds for spreading the deadly coronavirus.

So what are the rules that Tesco shoppers must follow? We explain what you need to know.

Wear a face mask in store

Tesco said that it is a legal requirement for shoppers to wear a face covering in stores.

The supermarket will not let anyone who is not wearing a face covering into stores – unless they’re exempt from wearing one.

Face coverings must also cover your mouth and nose.

Shop alone

Customers wanting to make a trip into stores must shop alone, unless you’re a carer or you have children.

Tesco also urged customers to shop only when they need to, in line with the government’s orders for Brits to stay at home.

One-in, one-out

Shoppers will only be let in under a ‘one-in, one-out’ system.

This is in place to ensure social distancing, the supermarket said.

Wait for the green light

Tesco has installed a traffic light system at entrances to more than 1,300 of its stores.

The system monitors customer numbers in store and will light up green when you can safely enter.

If the light is red, you must queue outside the store.

Sanitise your hands, basket and trolley

Cleaning stations have been put into stores so customers can sanitise their trolley or basket.

Shoppers have also been asked to help themselves to hand sanitiser located around the store to use while they shop.

Tesco’s boss also reminded customers that employees delivering food to your home will keep a safe distance while dropping your order off.

They will also be regularly sanitising their hands and equipment.

However, he urged customers to free up online slots for those who need them most, and to shop in store instead – if you’re able to do so safely.
