BRITS jetting to the Canary Islands have been spared a night-time ­curfew which could last for six months on the Spanish mainland.

A new state of emergency announced yesterday by Spanish PM Pedro Sanchez does not apply to Tenerife and Gran Canaria.

The government justified the exemption because of the low rate of Covid in the region.

It came as Transport Secretary Grant Shapps put the Canaries back on the UK’s “safe” list of regions, meaning people returning home do not have to quarantine.

But tourists to the islands may need to prove they are free of coronavirus, with Covid certificates or tests at a local clinic, before being allowed in hotels.

The regional government is set to discuss the issue later this week.
